Secondary at the British International School of Barranquilla is committed to developing students who are enquiring, informed, educated, caring and motivated to succeed. We belong to the International Baccalaureate organisation which has more than 5,300 schools around the world that stand out for their academic rigour, international mindedness and personal development. In secondary schools, the two institutional pillars, the academic pillar and the social pillar, are the two main pillars of the International Baccalaureate. Behaviour, are a fundamental basis that guides our daily work. We are very proud of our achievements as an institution and are committed not only to our students and their families, but also to making the world a better place.

The Secondary School combines national and international curricula, such as the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB), preparing students for both national and international standards. The implementation of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) promotes active learning, international mindedness and purpose in students’ lives. Upon completion of the MYP, students are prepared for the IB Diploma Programme (DP), and undertake the Personal Project to develop key skills.

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a rigorous academic framework that encourages students aged 11 to 16 (Years 7 to 11) to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. This 5-year programme prepares students for the IB Diploma Programme (DP).

The IB Diploma Programme offers six (6) subjects: three (3) upper level and three (3) middle level subjects, from which students must choose one from each group from 1 to 5. This ensures a broad experience in languages, social sciences, experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject can be Visual Arts, Film or Music, which belong to group 6 (Arts), or it can be Economics, Biology or Systems.

The MYP is applied from Year 7, the last year of Primary school; starting in Secondary school from Year 8 to Year 11.
